I can't wait to switch from shared host to VPS and change my web dev practice. I grew up with php, but it's really time to say goodbye to the past.
@Rovine it's getting to the point where I have to learn it. The project that I develop for is running very low on developers. No one seems to want to join us for some reason, yet we get all the stupid people asking ridiculous support questions.
@cambridgeport90 @Rovine interesting as you discuss for me it was the state of documents. Most people I know still script on php but I tried learning for a day and moved on. Gonna try my hand at node.js first..
Though I still want an HTML first approach to my life
@jgmac1106 @Rovine I think all these different languages are good, but the fact there were so many makes things extremely difficult.
@jgmac1106 @Rovine I don't know. Running everything in HTML by default just seems like we're going backwards instead of forwards. That could be just me though.
@jgmac1106 @Rovine So is there any point in learning more advanced programming language for web development then? I find it easier to perform a lot of advanced tasks and other languages aside from HTML.
@cambridgeport90 @Rovine no not all. I just think that HTML provides a more equitable and inclusive pathway to more advanced languages...
rush to start with advanced languages bad IMO
@cambridgeport90
Are you asking for any particular project that you're working on atm? It all depends on what you are trying to do.

HTML is always the end goal when it comes to the web, as @jgmac1106 said. How much advanced programming is needed depends on your goal and circumstances. For example for a blog, someone reported WriteFreely using less resource than a static HTML generator. However if you don't have the infrastructure to run the nuts and bolts of WriteFreely, then something as close to HTML as possible would be ideal.
@Rovine @cambridgeport90 WriteFreely looks great and adding micropub support in the roadmap. Will check out.
@jgmac1106 @Rovine I thought of messing with that. The only thing that stops me, is previous licenses for other things that I've purchased, as well as the fact that I want my website to be much more than a blog. I wanted to integrate with a ton of other things, and for that you need more advanced programming. Then again, almost everything I play with has to have advanced integrations. I never learned how to do things in a simple manner.
@cambridgeport90 @Rovine no you don't what are you trying to do? Check out my site https://jgregorymcverry.com all just HTML and I use Known built by @benwerd and @mapkyca it is turn key and integrates with Mastodon..
No advanced programming needed.
@cambridgeport90 @Rovine @benwerd What are you looking for that SemPress doesn't provide? Have you installed of @pfefferle OStatus plugins? Allows blog to become Fediverse instance.
@jgmac1106 @Rovine @benwerd @pfefferle eventually I want to have active directory integration as well. Although I'm actually planning on stepping away from WordPress. Other alternatives work just as well. They don't support this stuff as of yet, but that could be changing rather quickly.
@cambridgeport90 @Rovine @benwerd check out what I am doing with Known. Https://quickthoughts.jgregorymcverry.com Has a early release... O
of IFPS, Mastodon support, and ActivityPub through https://brid.gy (native support coming soon).
Growing number of contributors building stuff everyday.
AND to bring us full circle... It's php...
@cambridgeport90 @Rovine also check out what @jalcine is building on his sites... Don't think Koype out there for public use yet but he has the designs and values I want in any stack.
@cambridgeport90 @Rovine @jalcine microdotblog has ActivityPub integration... Too bad no webmentions in Mastodon... And it's most turn key out there.. $5.00 a month and you are done.
@jgmac1106 @Rovine @jalcine I'm trying to understand the purpose of that thing, when there's so many other options out there. I sort of get it, but I sort of don't.
@cambridgeport90 @Rovine @jalcine just another option. Take a bit and write a toot (better yet post) on your why? What is it you want and more importantly why? Then match to best option.
@jgmac1106 @Rovine @jalcine that's definitely one way to put it. Plus, I'm also looking for the challenge of a self-hosted solution, so don't forget that part of it.
self hosted on your server a shared host? Do you want a CMS, more into static site... I frame it this way do you want to touch no, some, or tons of code? Second how skilled do you think you are in touching no, some, or tons of code...
Those two points influence the platform choice and your goals in pushing content or learning code.
I cheat the content I push is me learning and teaching others about code, community, and comprehension
But I do wish all this happened from my own Domain... Will gladly hop to what ever Mastodon server creates a fork with native webmentions.... Though without being in core would only work with other instances supporting webmentions.
Maybe that is a good thing. Folks have expressed legit philosophical concerns with syndication and webmentions.
@cambridgeport90 @Rovine no...not backwards at all... Ensuring backwards compatibility in away that data always remains human readable first... I guess it's Back to Future
