i guess at some point #firefox changed

media.autoplay.enabled = false
to
media.autoplay.default = 1

it's counterintuitive but you want = 1 to forbid videos from autoplaying. also set
media.autoplay.allow-muted = false
while you're in about:config

@cambridgeport90 firefox does lotsa odd things and i'm a mere user. i'm just glad there's an option that works!

i'd personally rename it media.disable.autoplay
