Journalists will never stick around this app long term sadly unless it adds quote posting. We desperately need it to communicate effectively, build on each others ideas, and add crucial context to posts. These are things replies simply do not accomplish. Also quote posting or reblogging does not = harassment! Tumblr, for instance, has had the feature since the beginning. We need it here now too 🙏🏻

@taylorlorenz I understand the tension, but I will say that the tendency to dunk is very strong and it makes me think that the real solution might be coming up with an alternate way of presenting others’ thoughts that is different from quote-tweeting.

One idea I have—threading that allows you to include thoughts by others within the thread, kind of like what Storify used to enable.

@ernie replies are used for harassment far more than reblogging! Tumblr has had reblogging forever, wouldn’t call it a hotbed of harassment. The issue w simply including others thoughts is that we need the ability to add context, like tumblr reblog. I do a lot of work w/ online harassment & strongly believe removing this feature is a net negative for journalists. Ppl here seem misguided about how harassment really manifests. But again I just wish we were all back in tumblr!

@taylorlorenz I think @Gargron had a principled stance on this issue when he first said the network wasn’t getting quote tweets a few years ago (which I presume you’ve seen). I think that you could make the case that features not included here, like algorithmic discovery, are intended to maintain a certain experience.

To me, I would make the case that search is actually the bigger loss for journalists than QTs. But I think people are adapting well to the changes.

@taylorlorenz It has also been said that the Fediverse is such that, if features prove too important to lose, people can switch to different applications or server types that do offer these features.

@taylorlorenz Also Tumblr was good. I had quibbles with how it approached creators there, but it was good.

@ceoln I left it full time in 2014 so you have to excuse me for thinking about it in past tense :)

Yeah... I was there for a little while a long time ago (maybe even 2014!) but then drifted away and like forgot about that account until I was reminded of it recently. Still fun and random over there!
