Being a very involved grandparent promotes the well-being among grandfathers but not among grandmothers where daily caretaking of grandchildren leads to a reduction in wellbeing. This is an interesting finding from a new study by Leimer & van Ewikj utilising data from SHARE.

The study finds that grandchildren overall contributes to a slightly lower quality of life contradictory to the idea that grandparenthood is joyous and a positive life event - the authors interpret this a evidence of role strain. @sociology @publichealth sciencedirect.com/science/arti?

@clausdh That's the most interesting finding I have heard in a while in sociology.

@clausdh @sociology @publichealth grandparenting is fun, parenting your grandchildren because your own children are too overworked or not able to parent is not fun.

Yes, I love looking after/spending time with my 4 year old granddaughter but every day would be far too much.
The contrast with grandfathers well being is very interesting and I wonder if this will change over time as stereotypical gender roles change.
