The first sentence of Paul Theroux's "The Pillars of Hercules" is still one of my favorites

@cyrilpedia yes! one of the very best travel writers. The Dunnetts is another favourite (can’t find which book starts with them).

My first Theroux was when I read the Mosquito Coast as a teenager - and loved it.

@cyrilpedia I searched through 7 books and then asked Google. In my searches I found many beautiful passages. What a writer.

It’s in Pillars of Hercules, which apparently I don’t have. But not that close to the start. In my recollection he was in one of those eternal railway compartments.
