'American democracy in action. A star chamber of preening, self-aggrandising politicians issuing offensive performative and partisan attacks against a man who has served his country for decades as a scientist and scientific administrator. The hearing was a spectacle of embarrassment for a country that has proven unable to face up to the lessons of the COVID-19 pandemic.'

1)Past accomplishments do not excuse his Covid-facing transgressions. He was a pernicious source of misinformation regarding SARS-CoV-2's origin, airborne transmission, and the extent of the human immune system's ability to resist SARS-CoV-2 infection, to tolerate exposure to its antigens, and to remediate infected tissues. He also widely exaggerated the ability of existing and on-deck pharmaceutical interventions to render the pandemic manageable.

2)People make mistakes. Some people make a lot of mistakes. But when those mistakes are legitimate, they tend lack directionality. Fauci's missteps always pointed in the same direction, one that favored letting it rip to allow GVT to get back the the business of making money and consolidating power while hoping that pharma figured it out eventually.

3)They're still letting it rip. Pharma still hasn't figured it out and doesn't even seem particularly motivated to do so. And why would they? They're in the business of maintaining chronic conditions, not rendering chronic conditions transient through cure. The Covid-19 pandemic has not divested them of this attitude.
