I've seen a few folks mention the importance of tags on mastadon, is it possible to follow tags?

i have been using hashtags like #earthquake and #EarthquakeReport
it seems like they may need to propagate which seems to take some time... but others have seen my toots where i used those tags and they are on a different server.
tho i am still on my steep learning curve!
