After watching Threads last night, I have to wonder, was using doors and bags of dirt really going to make an effective nuclear shelter? Or was it something the government issued to placate the population? A sort of something's better than nothing.

I'm not forgetting that film in a hurry.

@UKFilmNerd protect and survive was a placation exercise, as when the wind blows showed. Any mass will slow down radiation but yeah couple of sand bags isn't going to cut it anywhere near a nuclear explosion..
