iTunes on Windows freaks out and fails to rip this CD because it can't create a particular Unicode filename and it never occurred to them to add recovery handling for that

You may be asking "why are you using iTunes on Windows". And that is a fair question. But the answer is I thought back to the last time I used a piece of software that worked well (2004) and I simply installed that piece of software.

@mcc iTunes on Wine is still the only reliable way I've found to buy music online that isn't available through Bandcamp. (On Windows, it keeps resetting my music library paths, but that bug doesn't repo in Wine for what I can only assume are entirely cursed reasons.)

@xgranade Amazon used to have what seemed like a pretty good solution but they tore it down to create a streaming service nobody uses

@mcc That's what I used to use, yeah (and still kind of do for some Japanese music that's inexplicably region locked on iTunes), but to your point it sucks that Amazon has hollowed out the MP3 store in favor of whatever Prime Music is. Since iTunes on Windows is an abandoned fossil, no such danger there.

@xgranade @mcc I've taken to just ordering the CD from Amazon, because I happen to still own a (external) CD drive to rip from. Used to use their auto-rip and download services.
