Thinking about email. I want to delete my multiple Gmail accounts. I’m not sure which I prefer:
- Rent a(nother) domain for email
- Use another email provider’s domain
Either way, I’m either locked into an email provider or renting a domain. I’m worried that managing the domain myself could lead to downtime switching registrars/email providers.
@hutchie I've been using my own domain with Gmail and Fastmail and a few other providers for a while. Since I control the DNS records, I can switch those while multiple providers are still setup to receive. I don't think I've ever lost important mail this way.
And I can switch DNS settings more easily than update my address with who-knows-how-many websites. Especially with free providers like gmail my main fear was getting locked out of my account for some random reason.
@hutchie @jelmervdl you could connect to GMail via IMAP now and again and archive a full copy
@falken @jelmervdl for sure, I do this! :) My fear is losing the ability to confirm my identify via 2FA, and what I'd miss in the downtime while I set up another existence
