If you haven't done it, being the admin or moderator for a Fediverse instance is labor, y'all. Nothing about it is easy.

The lesson I'm taking away from the broader Fediverse's meltdown over the #fosstodon thing is that we need more and smaller instances. 200-300 active users is manageable for a small admin/mod team. More than that, and you're just asking for trouble.

Speaking of, are you tossing some $$/££/€€/equivalent to the team running the instance you're on?

And thank your admin/mod teams often. Maybe even see if they need a volunteer.

@djwfyi Maybe some servers need to go contributor-only. Most people have the ability to give a few bucks a month to support server upkeep and compensate for moderation time.

@MisterMoo @djwfyi "fediverse; not for the poor" ain't a great look. Most people don't understand they are paying for Twitter/Bkuesky with their and their friends privacy

@falken @MisterMoo

I totally understand and respect that not everyone can contribute to running an instance with money. But for those who can, it's easy to forget that there aren't ads and privacy violations funding the Fediverse like all the other social media.

Thanks for your reply.

@falken I get it. Not all servers will do this, in any case. But there are a lot of free riders using Mastodon, costing admins money without contributing anything back. The population of Mastodon users who *literally* cannot afford, say, the equivalent of two dollars per month has got to be *very* small.
