I'll beat this drum a little louder.
Chronically understaffed and overworked air traffic controllers learned at the end of last week what to expect in their paychecks this Thursday: nothing. They are not getting paid for the past month due to the govt shutdown.
On Sunday many air traffic controllers called in sick resulting in 8,700 delayed flights. On Monday an addl 3,370 flights were delayed with 118 flights in or out of the US cancelled.
That's gonna leave a mark.
@VisualStuart with a bit of luck, the mark will be a reduction in the amount of climate pollution.
@ArchaeoIain
Yes, less air traffic due to less Air Traffic. Controllers —> a ‘natural experiment’; it will be interesting to see the difference & to get more current data to inform climate models. (Silver lining) 🙂
Don’t want to trivialise the situation with the Air Traffic Controllers tho’ & I’m glad they’re calling in sick, as need be; few things can be more stressful, on top of an already high stress job, than knowing you’re not getting paid for it. 😐
What happens to the private jets I wonder? Do they all have private airports & no need for the services of ATCs? Well ‘lucky’ old them eh?
@ArchaeoIain @Su_G @VisualStuart as did 9/11
