RE: mastodon.social/@RollingStoneE

i just…

how can 2 million people watch a concert in situ?

at that point, the stage is incidental. maybe a few thousand get to see the act in the flesh. everybody else is watching via a screen.

so why do 2 million people gather at concerts like that?

megaconcerts are the kind of niche events that merit having an army of anthropologists chronicling the before, during & after; to produce blogs & documentaries of how the people in the crowd experience “the concert”.

@blogdiva That's like... one third of the population of the city. I remember being at the Red Bull Air Races in Rio 20 years ago and they said the attendance was 1 million and I thought THAT was huge.

@bishop6 it’s truly bananas that so many people gather at events like that. i have seen music documentaries that touch on the topic for like a minute. we need an anthropology of the concert circuit; especially the megafestivals. i wanna know what happens in the crowds; what makes people go to a show they most likely won’t see. inquiring minds (and by that i mean, me) want to know what makes it a thing to go to?

@blogdiva @bishop6 at least with (2 entries in top 3 all time largest en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_) you get an awesome off-stage lights, lasers and fireworks show...
