I have figured out that the solution to my problem is DR-DOS twice in one lifetime now.

Next problem. I cannot remember or work out how to get RemoteAccess to give you custom ANSI menus.

This used to be so easy to find out. We have lost so much knowledge in the last 25 years.

Fuck Google.

@bloor
2.02 but I'm willing to upgrade if you can point me to the files.

I know my old BBS was a later version but all the sites hosting files have fallen off the Internet. I've been in a loop of unavailable domains and FTP sites for days.

@jamesb hmm what is annoying is I actually did this, myself, X00 fossil driver, RA2.04g, colourful ASCII/ANSI menus etc. But I have no recollection of how i configured it, or where to place the files.

@bloor
I'm pissed off at myself for not keeping the files now. But it didn't seem worth it all that time ago. It took up years of my life - including setting the direction of it -  and I just threw the disks away.

@bloor
But what annoys me most is that there was so much documentation at the time - the docs came with the software or you had write ups about how to do it for the setup you wanted. The latter is lost. Or at least somewhere on archive.org that you can't easily find.

@jamesb Does the RA_DOC.ZIP file here really not contain the info you're looking for?

@bloor
It probably does but my 40 odd year old addled brain can't work it out yet.

Back in 1996 I couldn't work out error levels and stuff. Some random bbs sysop phoned me up and sat with me on the phone to get my thing working for about 2 hours.

We don't have that these days.

I made sure I passed the knowledge on when I had the chance afterwards. I just wish I could remember it all.

@jamesb I asked ChatGPT to summarise it, and some stuff did start to come back - particularly the ascii/ansi/avatar variants in separate files.
