@masterofthetiger Gimp is getting better with the newer versions, but for professionals it's still a far cry from Photoshop. Darktable is pretty comparable to Lightroom, but it still has performance issues and I still prefer Lightroom's UI. Developer tools on Linux are far superior though and nothing compares to a good tiling window manager.
I agree with you about the proprietary software interaction. I think the golden age of FOSS people wanted in the 90s didn't really happen.

In terms fo graphic artist tools as a whole I agree, OSXis the winner, even windows is better. But as i said largely outside of the graphic arts arena linux is the winner in most cases. vim, emacs, git, pretty much all the tools I care about are all far superior IMO.

You could hack them to work on windows in one way or another (either compile it natively or use cygwin, not sure how they do it).. Sadly however their windows varients dont perform nearly as well as their linux counterpart. But that is probably more to blame for windows poor performance than anything to do with the software itself.
