I was thinking hard about what point or takeaway i wanted to give everyone as we all celebrate Men's Day. I think on days like this its good to do two things: celebrate the good things, and also be more aware of ways in which men can be the target of sexism, regardless of how that might compare to the oppression of women which is a topic for the other days out of the year.
I think one of the most important examples of sexism against men is the way they are treated when seeking help as the victim of physical or sexual abuse. In the vast majority of cases they are either turned away or appalingly often accused of being the abuser themselves if you can beleive that. The problem is massively common as the graph below shows.
Im not sure what we should do about it but i am sure we shoukd be aware of it.
@static
Thank you so much.
@freemo You could also include a graph of domestic violence by gender to highlight the importance of this. Male vs. female are divided almost 50:50 IIRC.
No this is actually significantly more common for men, ill find the original study when i get home for you if youd like. This is certainly a uniquely male issue.
Remember we arent talking about how friends or family react but how abuse helplines and shelters respond to them, actual trained professionals. It really is a uniquely appaling issue faced mostly by men in that regars.
@freemo Yes, I realize that. But most people don't think violent abuse is a problem for men at all to begin with. Hence my suggestion.
@raucao
Ahh i see what you mean. Good point
@cowanon Most of that didnt make sense.
As for the women, this particular problem is not one they face, but they have plenty of other problems they do of course.
But womens issues are for the other 364 days of the week, today is not the day for that, or at least, this post is not.
With that said any other day I'd be happy to promote awareness about issues women face.
@cowanon Ahh that is very sad indeed. If you check the thread only one person seemed to do that so far. So I am pretty happy with how respectful and compassionate my followers have been
@why
I think because in thia case its something that usually if you talk about it you will get attacked for it, so people dont talk about it. Its more acceptable on this day so people take the chance they dont usually have to say it and be heard.
@why
Im ok with that if the rest of society is.
@meowski I decided to focus on one thing only. But yes that can be an issue when it comes to child custody or even divorce hearings I'd imagine. It would be harder to get clean data on though too, I like to confirm accusations.
