A Complaint About Mastodon Signup

I don't understand the situation with #QOTO. As someone who runs a group account there, I am hurt by the fact that the only app-suggested general STEM server is frequently blocked. I'm not sure whose fault this is, but I feel like suggesting a server that is frequently defederated for whatever reason, valid or not, paints exactly the negative image of the #fediverse that naysayers have been promoting. I also feel like it will be harder to convince friends to join

I'm not sure what should be done about this. I'm just someone who is new, and rather upset that I got into this situation just by picking a server from the app. I even looked through the local feed first and saw nothing objectionable. I guess the best solution is just to remove the #QOTO suggestion from the list of servers on signup. I feel a little bad for @freemo for suggesting this, but nothing on the qoto signup page makes a noob notice this problem

@bleushift What do you mean by "frequently blocked"... we have, in fact one of the biggest footprints in the fediverse (most connected to other servers).. we are in the top 20.. the only instances that block us are ones with block lists a mile long and dont federate with even mastodon.social in many cases.

@freemo I've found QOTO to be blocked by a lot of small, new, left-leaning instances, to the point where a decent number of discussions of blocklists new use QOTO as an example; many of these servers don't block mastodon.social as best as I can tell. For an account that's trying to reach a lot of different people, including at least one I know of on a server with such a list, it was untenable. Actually tempted to move this acct to QOTO tho
