Twitter Files nonsense aside, it is worth thinking about how the security apparatus will deal with Mastodon as it grows. These small instances will not have the resources to handle FBI pressure or requests, or infiltration by other governments, etc. If this thing keeps growing without developing on that front shit could go sideways in fall 2024
@philipncohen it won’t be a problem I’m sure , especially for small instances
@tonic how much damage could a malignant actor do by putting up their own instance and disseminating disinformation, before everyone had time to block them?
As tonic stated this has happened many times before to great effect, and without needing to setup an instance at all. See this write up I did that explains this very thing happening:

There is an effort I helped start to address this issue, you can check it out here:
Thanks. It is an ongoing problem but the new federation we are forming should be a powerful force against it in the end.
@freemo @tonic thank you for sharing that. That is quite a story. Although it may have had a successful outcome in the end, it's clear that the bad actors created a lot of chaos. If they were more sophisticated state actors, it seems it might've been worse. The new Federation looks great.
