So I found this cool new tool that looks like a very new take on the idea of a blocklist, not really sure I can even call it a block list.
https://gui.fediseer.com/instances/detail/qoto.org
As I understand it it does a few things:
1) Only system administrators can get accounts, but users can view the data
2) a chain of trust which in and of itself only proves you arent a spammer. Anyone in the chain of trust can add other instances. Once an instance is in the chain then their admin can get an account and contribute
3) an instance in the chain of trust can add up to 20 other instances to the chain of trust. Should the instance loose their trust from their parent then the entire chain breaks including instances it trusted.
4) You can add endorsements.. this is stronger than adding someone to the chain of trust. It is a way of you saying "this is a good server" and explaining what features make them a server you endorce
5) You can censure instances too, these are instances you block and give reasons why.
6) there are also lesser categories like hesitations where you can list concerns but not suggesting blocking.
7) All this can be automatically populated from your instances black/white list if you wish. Or you can add entries manually
8) you get a little badge you can put on your servers about me that shows the number of endorsements you have live.
I do highly encourage everyone to check it out.
@freemo
It really looks cool.
We've finally got guarantee and I've spent some time spreading our guarantees and some endorsements too.
Also I've just wrote a feature request for it which I think could be useful for instances with more flexible moderation policies than usual:
@skobkin I reached out to them seeing if they would be interested in me contributing some features... no response... I may just fork it and run my own if its not actively maintained
@skobkin BTW do you know off hand if QOTO was endorsed and if so if endorsements are set to invisible for everyone?
Im just curious because it says i have 5 endorsements but even when im logged in I only see 4.
@freemo
I'm not sure I'm following.
What do you mean? Which visibility settings?
Here how it looks in a private window of my browser.
Do you mean that you don't see us (lor.sh)?
Maybe we're awaiting for some kind of approval of some time period 🤷♂️
https://gui.fediseer.com/instances/detail/lor.sh
See the part where it says
> Endorsements visibility
Notice it says "no one" ... thats why.. you need to go into your instance and edit it and chance the visibility... By default it would be everyone so at some point you changed this to "no one" which is why it doesnt show.
By the way ill give you guys an endorsement shortly (and ill do this regardless of if you endorse qoto or if its visible, dont worry my endorsements arent conditional)
@freemo
Thank you for this explanation.
You're right.
But either these settings weren't default, or our owner set it like that. I set endorsements visibility for everyone at least temporarily. I'll check out with owner to make sure that it's not against how he sees our profile on fediseer.
P.S. By "owner" I mean Mastodon's role of server owner, not some secret illuminati person 😄
He may just not want it to be public because he is scared of any backlash from endorsing an instance or something, I dunno.
He may have thought it made lor.sh profile private, rather than hiding endorsements on other instances (which is what it actually does).
@freemo
Yes, it's possible. We have non-public instance block list on "about" page for the same reason. Some people are defederating just because we didn't defederate from someone trying not to trample on the freedom of our users 🤷♂️
I can't say that I like it very much, I'm more fond of transparency, but it is what it is.
@skobkin In that case it makes sense to have your endorsements public but have your censures private... you may want to reconsider if you make your hesitations public or not though.
@freemo
Yes. That's why I made only our endorsements public. But I may revert that when I get a reply. It's not for me to decide.
@skobkin If you can and are willing if that changes please let me know.. just out of curiosity on my end though.
By the way I added an endorsement for your instance
@freemo
Thank you ❤️
@freemo
BTW, looks like we're leaving endorsements public for now.
@skobkin Wonderful to hear!
@skobkin I even checked on my phone... take a look at the QOTO page from a private not logged in window... do you see it then?
