Help me decide what distro to use on my Garage PC.
I'll use it to program chips, mostly ESP32,ESP8266 and similar. Also listen in on radio traffic with an RTL-SDR.

I am defaulting to Debian on this one, if you does not try to convince me to try something else

@selea Without having anyidea what you want or need in a distro (feel free to share if you want a more specific answer)... I very highly recommend NixOS. I havent gotten to much into GUIX but thats another similar alternative.

They go about system management VERY different than most linux os with a more declaritive form.

but I spent my whole like on Arch and Debian and now that i discovered NixOS it is a game changer in so many ways!

@freemo

It might be worth a try! I have thought about going with Nix for many years, but I fear that I have to spend an awful amount of time getting to know it?

@selea Sadly yes it is a tool with a steeper learning curve than a simple package manager. Nothing too out of reach, but with power and novility comes the need to learn

I can say at first i didnt know much about how it worked but i was able to hack through it and get a system running. Within just a few weeks I was able to administer it across an entire company.

Early on you just steal someone elses install config and modify it a bit for your own packages you want installed, keep it simple. AS long as you arent doing anything too fancy in the install configs its really easy. Then learn as you go, thats what I did.
