I generally like to go that extra mile to show respect when traveling. For most cultures that is as simple as learning their native words for please and thank you. For the japanese im not sure what that looks like yet, sounds like bowing, if done wrong can give a sense of disrespect rather than respect.

Im not sure what is the safer route, bowing and getting it wrong or not bowing at all.
