What are we doing?

"Noah Lyles's bronze medal in the Olympic men's 200-meter dash Thursday in Paris surprised many, given the speed he demonstrated while winning gold in the 100-meter race. However, after the race—which Lyles left in a wheelchair—it was revealed that Lyles was suffering from COVID-19."

"The Paris Olympics do not have anything resembling strict COVID protocols, so Lyles did not break any rules by particpating in Thursday's race. In fact, he reportedly isn't even the first athlete to participate in the 2024 Games while positive for COVID. "

We will not know many Covid cases, because many athletes might only compete in one event.

@ABScientist COVID is quite common without symptoms or issues. I have had it 8 times now because I worked as a scientist with patients so I was tested often. Of the 8 times i had it I presented no symptoms of any kind 7 out of those 8 times.

Only reason they are showing up positive is because its just so common to present asymptomatically. In fact you are probably around hundreds of people in a day who would test positive but have no symptoms.

@freemo

You be among the around 10% of the population with the HLA allele, which makes it likely that your infections are asymptomatic.

It is a genetic lottery. If you have the right genes, Covid is a walk in the park.

If you have the wrong genes, consider your role in society ended.

@freemo

As a society, we have chosen to select for people with the right genes to withstand Covid.

The rest can withdraw in isolation and stop contributing to society.

@ABScientist less of a choice society makes, more about the nature of evolution and disease. Sadly its just how evolution works, its a shame we cant make a huge difference when it comes to these things. Sadly some people will always be high risk and die.

@freemo

But does that mean that we have to bully them because they wear a mask to protect themselves against a virus that hits them hard?

Make fun of them that they get ill from a virus that other people sail through?

Because that is the society that we are currently in.

@ABScientist

No one shoukd be getting bullied for wearing masks, no one shoukd be bullied for not wearing masks either.

No making fun of them is wrong.

Sadly yes ive seen both people who wear masks and dont be bullied for their choice. Its wrong in both cases.

@freemo

Is it also Ok to walk away from high risk situations?

Obviously you cannot join drinks or dinner at work if you get sick as a dog each time you catch Covid.

@ABScientist One would expect an immunocompromised person to avoid crowds. I would encourage that.

@freemo @ABScientist so it is ok that certain groups are actively excluded from participating society because you think C19 has no consequences for you? I have several words in mind which for selfish people like you. Hopefully you will never be pushed in this situation yourself.

@Rebec_aR @freemo

It is the path that we have chosen as a society. We do not want to place any restrictions on those who only experience mild Covid. The others can stay home (unless they have to go to work to pay the bills) or try to not get sick by wearing a respirator mask (and receive angry stares for doing so).

It is quite revealing. I had not expected so many people to be like this.
