I'm not a hhuge fan of Jordan Peterson, but this one is spot on. Not so much about him not using trans people's pronouns, I dont agree with that. But his point about being willing to offend people is quite valid. The issue with not using the proper pronoun is **not** because you might offend someone, it is because caring about people is not the same thing as not offending someone. Not using their desired pronouns comes from a place of not caring about someone, using them is not an attempt to avoid offense, its to show them you care.
@freemo
The problem of
"This must be canceled, because someone might be offended"
shows up in a lot of Fediverse content "moderation".
If instance content moderation seeks to protect the feelings —and identity— of anyone who feels offended, or just claims that someone else may be offended, and files a complaint,
an instance adhering to such moderation principles will effectively get censored by an
HOA of Karens.
Case in point:
In Elon Musk's cesspit, where you can say anything and get totally shadow banned,
https://x.com/Tatzelbrumm/status/1819464641380340170
I made a comment on Simone Biles loving her "black job" as "Greatest of all time"
with a mashup picture of Surya Bonali's blackbody radiation.
The HOA of Karens doing content policing at fediscience.org
cancelled it for "racism".
For your principled stance against such nonsense,
qoto.org
is blacklisted as "free speech area" at a lot of Fediverse instances where people who matter to me still have their primary presence.
@freemo I don't think there's any problem offending people in general. But I think *whom* you offend says a hell of a lot about your character.
If it's mostly marginalized people taking offense at your rhetoric, you may be an asshole.
If it's mostly people with power taking offense, you may be a revolutionary.
