@Ponygirl By the way, new thread (for tomorrow). I noticed you are a speech therapist. I recently noticed, through my own observations, that accent acquisition seems to occur **before** language acquisition. I notice this in babies who cant form words yet, but also in animals who havent quite evolved speech yet but can communicate, for example I have noticed it in both cats and dogs.
Any thoughts on this?
@freemo Good question. I'm not sure if you mean speech sounds of the mother tongue, or accents of speech sounds of foreign (to the child/listener) languages. I can say that all species who are hearing are subject to imitate sounds of the language (mother tongue) or even languages that they hear. Some children imitate these sounds very early, before they can even convey their receptive skills. However, it is typical for receptive language development to be a few step ahead of expressive.
