New Yorkers = New migrants in NY... This city is made of waves of immigrants. New people arrive and we start working together...

TLDR:
"This city is made of waves of immigrants. New people arrive and we start working together."

The Newest New Yorkers

Hi! This is Rev…. I’m sending this message to fellow Big Apple citizens, but let me include you in. Lots of you out there are former NYers or you might have other reasons to take interest in our handling of our new friends from afar. Here’s my pitch:

——

LISTEN UP NEW YORKERS. TAKE THE WELCOME OF NEW NEW YORKERS INTO YOUR OWN HANDS. (CITY HALL IS IMITATING TEXAS.) IF WE SHARE WHAT WE HAVE - THE NEWCOMERS ARE READY TO GIVE.

“The migrants will destroy New York. And they are coming to a neighborhood near you.” Mayor Eric Adams’ quote is from Donald Trump’s playbook, experimenting with directed fear. He wants us to forget that we are New Yorkers.

As some of you know, the world travelers walked into our downtown world, some of them in flip-flops and t-shirts, not ready for their first northern winter. When we found them freezing in long lines with the city not taking them in, East Village Neighbors Who Care brought out food and clothing. Now 100 West Africans spend their weekdays with the choir in the Earthchxrch, with the same neighbors there helping...

NYC is the wealthiest city, with empty real estate just sitting there. We are approaching full employment. We got jobs. But the newcomers are being confronted with a cynical hostile environment, smacking of the old workfare schemes. They must prove to exhausted civil servants that they are looking for work and a place to live, or they will be left to the streets. This is an obvious Kafka nightmare.

If someone has fled gunmen and journeyed 5,000 miles, and now seeks asylum in the city with Lady Liberty’s torch shining on the waters - is this a helpless free-loader? Hey Eric! Are you afraid of their strength? …their stamina and independence? Are the leaders of tomorrow sleeping on the subway benches?

Simple. This city is made of waves of immigrants. New people arrive and we start working together. New York.

While we're on this local newsletter, our founding singer Donald Gallagher brings Grace Church to life and now will make a book of his handiwork with your help: gofund.me/b695d748
