@garyackerman It’s called structural markup vs. presentational markup (think HTML vs CSS). It also allows you to automatically create a table of contents complete with section numbering you can use for cross references. When you edit the document, everything will be automatically renumbered. Not enough people know this. I’d recommend LaTeX for this for large, complex documents, but unfortunately it still has a long way to go when it comes to accessibility.
