On killing off the full HS2 plan, Sunak pledges to "reinvest every penny" saved in rail, roads and buses in the North, the Midlands and across the country.

Don't fall for it.

HS2 is already *billions* of pounds over-budget.

There is not a single penny "saved".

He is deceiving us. Again. He takes us for fools.

@wiredfire This is a disappointment all around, so we can't have high-speed rail like many other countries in Europe and Asia, we can't have affordable regular trains either, and to make matters worse we have a sub-par road network too that's increasingly hardly ever repaired.

So bad news, on top of bad news, on top of bad news.

@wiredfire now I am going to rant. For my family of 4 every single time we travel locally for a short city break we drive, why do we drive? Because rail is just so insanely expensive!

Sure, if we are camping of course we have to drive, but sometimes a rail journey to a city would be perfect, but prices make it totally unaffordable.

This needs fixing.

@gpowerf Many years ago I committed to being a car owner because it was, even when i factored in buying the car itself, it was *significantly* cheaper (and much more convenient) than public transport with just two of us. That's not changed now we are three.

I agree it is beyond absurd.

@wiredfire it is indeed ridiculous that driving a 5.3-metre long pickup truck is cheaper than taking public transport. Granted, its a modern and frugal vehicle for what it is but it still does not compute!
