@shiftphones

There appear to be efforts to make the work with (fosstodon.org/@calebccff/10824).

Are there any plans to support bringing pmOS also to the ? Could you maybe supply the pmOS-devs (@bart) with a 5me as well, so they can work on it?

This would be awesome, as I really like the philosphy and the combination with pmOS would be perfect, but I can't afford a .

We are in contact and talked about this, but currently this would be a huge project considering that a lot of MT6797 related kernel parts are missing and would need to be developed from scratch.

That's why we focus on the SHIFT6mq, as SDM845 is supported pretty well with the mainline kernel.

You can check our current progress on MT6797 mainline work at our Gerrit Code Review instance: review.shift-gmbh.com/q/projec
(Note: Very early stages, far away from sending it to mainline)

Thanks a lot for the info and for the effort you put into this. 👍

Maybe some time a used SHIFT6mq will find its way into my hands. But I'd also prefer the SHIFT5me because of its smaller size.

Background story, for why I want pmOS:

Right now I'm kind of fed up with Android .. after an "upgrade" from a rather dated version to Android 11 on my current phone, sooo many things work either much worse than before or don't work anymore at all (which worked perfectly). And there's hardly anything new that got added, that's useful (to me).
Now I'm rather pessimistic about the future of Android, obviously.
So my hopes are on pmOS.

@iLikeAltitude @shiftphones I get wanting the smaller size. Besides the SHIFT5me hopefully eventually being mainlined, I hope in the future they will make more smaller devices as well. I'd love a SHIFT4<something> at some point 😉

@bart

AFAIK there actually was a SHIFT4 ... you can still buy the battery in the shop.

Yeah, me too .. a 4.5 " screen is roughly my favourite size for a smartphone.
