I'm considering whether to try to split my Mastodon presence into multiple accounts. Basically, I have three different interests: 1) quasi-professional interactions with STEM professionals, 2) exchanging information related to my local area (there is a regionally-specific server), and 3) general interest posting, so I'm considering setting up as many as 3 different accounts. I just don't post that much, so it may not be worth it, but I definitely find that there are things I don't post or boost basically because I don't necessarily want to co-mingle (3) with (1) and (2) too much.

So I'm looking for advice on a) whether splitting accounts that way is really worth it (I know others have done this), b) whether there are other technical solutions I don't know about, and c) how one would best go about splitting things up and hopefully getting followers moved over to the appropriate new accounts.

@internic I'm also considering splitting my presence across 2-3 instances. Most of my follows are on lists, so ideally I'd find a tool to "migrate everyone except the ones on these three lists."

I think I'll just move everything onto my new "home" instance (, probably) and manually refollow my favorites on the old instance.

I'm unclear about the effect of putting a on the old instance, as we're advised to do--will that hamper my ability to continue having a distinct presence there?
