My brother is not a #ClimateCrisis denier. He fully acknowledges the science. He's not stupid. He just literally doesn't care.
He says it isn't his problem. He jets around wherever he wants, whenever he wants. He uses disposables and when he drives his fancy car, he jokes that the polar bears can choke on his exhaust.
He acknowledges that millions of people will die. His aim is to keep burning fossil fuels, make money to shelter his family from harm.
There's a reason we have a horrible relationship. I've stopped talking to him after more arguments than I can count. He just posted another photo of himself and his kid in Europe to our family chat.
I've left FB because I couldn't handle the conspicuous bragging of carbon burning of everyone on my feed. I can't exactly leave this family chat - it's my parents, mostly.
I know my only remaining form of social media (Twitter, that's now turned to Mastodon) puts me in a bubble of climate activists and it doesn't reflect that cold hard reality of most people literally not giving a shit.
I went into #ScienceCommunication thinking that if we just explained things better, we would get somewhere. No amount of that will help in this case... or in the cases of many others like him. They get the science just fine. They also think millions of people dying horrible deaths is just fine... because they truly believe they can shelter themselves and fundamentally don't care about others' suffering.
I can explain science, I can't explain empathy.
I feel like I've lost.
@chu Focus on policy. That gas guzzling jet and car might go away with enough taxes and charges and removal of CO2 credits. Find possible solutions. It's not a win-lose thing. It's a let's do something thing.
