It's really, really hard not to rewrite PhD student papers in my own voice, especially when I think them (a bit) too wordy and lyrical 😬 Leaning hard back and trying to only comment on things that are just unclear and not on things that I think can be expressed more compactly.

My advisor wants me to be more verbose, and it's very frustrating. I'm personally of the mind that "form" is secondary to "function"; if the transmission of your ideas isn't impeded by the style, I don't care if you write your manuscript as a screenplay or a bulleted list. Though this is also why I am not a particular fan of the modern "academese": its form often overrules its function.

@johnabs @Lapizistik it'a a hard balance between providing not enough text and not too much text, I've definitely seen people whose writing is too terse, especially with early career folks who either over-estimate what others know or under-estimate what is considered general knowledge in the field and how much background info is needed. And having clear, established standards does help non-native speakers ...
