### **What Happened in Lebanon?**

️⃣ We are surrounded by lithium batteries: phones, tablets, electric cars – from “Electrobus” to the golf cart Trump rides, medical equipment, VR devices, cameras. The Nobel committee, which awarded the energy storage technology using lithium with the chemistry prize about five years ago, put it like this: "Lithium-ion batteries have revolutionized our lives since they first appeared on the market in 1991. They laid the foundation for a wireless society free from fossil fuels and bring the greatest benefit to humanity."

️⃣ Some people (understandable, in a way) have produced a replica of a lithium battery that: a) looks like one; b) has all its functions (charges a device, holds a charge, recharges itself); c) passes basic safety measures (visual check, frame, scanner, or other similar methods used everywhere from airports to, say, the entrance to the Iranian Embassy in Beirut); d) explodes on command, causing serious damage.

️⃣ And it’s done on an industrial scale. Not just a one-time device (such as those used in the assassinations by Mossad with mobile phones or the Taliban’s assassination of Ahmad Shah Massoud with an explosive-laden video camera), but mass-produced replica devices installed in commercial products intended for an indefinite circle of people. This technology was tested on a system (a certain circle of people, with random extensions like children), and those concerned about their safety saw the tests succeed completely.

️⃣ The "COVID ratio" of casualties and victims (20 people to 4,000) is connected to the fact that the amount of explosives correlates with the size of the battery. Obviously, more explosives can be placed in the battery of a tablet, laptop, or premium "phablet" (while fully preserving the visual, functional, and X-ray properties of both the battery and the device) than in a pager battery. Thus, the damage from triggering the device will be greater than just torn-off limbs or blinded eyes. The most at-risk area for such innovations will inevitably be civil aviation, which will change irreversibly after their first practical use.

️⃣ Some things are not done, not because they cannot be done technically, but because they should not be done. The point of the September 11 attacks, commemorated last week, was not that the planes crashed or the buildings fell, but that creative, diligent people combined these fairly standard events with a unified plan and organizational structure. And that changed everything.

️⃣ An irreversible transition. The industrial production of devices that are barely detectable by standard control measures and placing them in mass-use wearable items can be compared to the transition from "smallpox-infected blankets" to modern biological weapons. Innovations, industry, and scalable and mass-produced technologies have entered where there was once only cottage industry and small private entrepreneurship. Factories now make what individual specialists like Q for James Bond used to do long, expensive, and meticulously. This will not bring happiness to humanity in general (nor security to the Middle East in particular).

️⃣ We are a civilization of lithium energy accumulators, and the so-called "civilized man" is far more dependent on them than the "feudal Middle Eastern terrorist." The challenge is not even to abstract global security but to the personal physical safety of every individual. I am sure that today, in hundreds of laboratories (both official and underground), offices, and bunkers around the world, people are looking at lithium batteries and the devices they power with entirely new eyes. Assessing who is "good," who is "bad," who is "defending," and who is "attacking" – what has happened vastly transcends the boundaries of the Middle Eastern conflict.
