Has anything good ever come from proprietary, centralized platforms?

Yeah, typically proprietary/capitalism has a big edge on other methods when it comes to Innovation.

For example typically proprietary software like Photoshop comes along and it takes open software (GIMP) time to catch up.

Social media has Facebook, Twitter, etc... Similar pattern with Fedi.

I'm sure there are other good examples

Android and the Linux Phone (albeit chickens and eggs at different zoom levels of the stack)

Etc...

As it turns out, competition, and allowing investors to stake a claim allows the best to float to the top. People used to know this panning for gold.
