Id suggest toying with clang. Not perfect but nicer in use than gcc+binutils. Written in way that makes much more sense. Uses cmake fir build and develled in full blown c++. Lovely code. I knew chief devel.

I could provide tutorial how to build it etc. It builds kernel now etc. Quite featurefull.
