"improving #OpenSource Project Documentation? ... Pay the Writers"
https://www.zdnet.com/article/linux-and-open-source-documentation-is-a-mess/
@lupyuen Preach it.
Coders and writers gotta’ eat, y’all.
If privacy, security, and all of the other good things that come with #FOSS are important to you, then pull out your wallets and SUPPORT THE OPEN-SOURCE SOFTWARE THAT YOU USE.
I currently support #PiHole, #UltramarineLinux, #Rescuezilla, #Joplin, #Fosstodon, and #HomeAssistant, with plans to add more this year.
Is it a lot of money? No, but if EVERYONE contributed just a little bit, it can become something substantial.
@RockyC @lupyuen
Using HomeAssistant and used Joplin. Instead of Pihole, prefer Adguard - both are essentially same in function. Question about Joplin- the reason I ditched is - lack of a web interface to access notes outside our devices. There are situations where one may not have access to their device but a terminal with browser. Not sure if they added that feature now. Using Trilium Next notes now.
@RockyC I‘m currently in a less than stellar situation so I cant do much but I donate a dollar a week to my favorite project. I plan to do more once I can. ;)
@haui I don’t do more than a dollar or two, but if we ALL did a dollar or two, then these projects would be well-funded.
@RockyC I agree on principle but in reality, from 1000 people some wont be interested, some wont understand, some wont have enough.
That means, even in rich countries, never will everyone be able or willing to and you cant make them. Ridding yourself of the responsibility, assuming you are financially able to, is naive.
I donate more than 1% of my income to foss at this point and I contribute code and I spread the word. Feel free to join our freedom cult.
@haui I think that spreading the word would be pretty effective. For a long time where I live, people had this notion that software should be FREE and they would put up with intrusive ads in exchange for FREE, but attitudes seem to be changing. People are starting to notice that their software and online experiences are turning to shit. This is when I pull out my laptop and show them that their experiences don’t have to be shitty. It just takes a little courage to change.
@RockyC thats an incredibly underrated take imo. Showing people how great free software can be is key.
@lupyuen most open source projects don't have a way of paying contributors.
People are less willing than ever to volunteer time and effort to #opensource projects.
