An interesting alternative to Mastodon, ActivityPub server is snac2. It is in compiled C and runs without db server, so, far lighter and faster than Mastodon, it is also API compatible, so perfect for bots, and Mastodon frontends can also be used as interface (on web or mobile). I use it since about 6 month now and is very happy with it :).

@Popolon i’m also using it for testing and the sqlite db is growing over time even with no activity, did you ran into the same problem?

As far I know, there is no sqlite DB, only files in well organised tree structure. The grow is probably due to how work ActivityPub, I never studied in deep this protocol, but it seems to keep a local copy of message sent by followed people. All kind of instances I've installed had the same issue
I'm running snac with these storage limits to control space usage:

"timeline_purge_days": 3,
"local_purge_days": 30,

These settings might seem aggressive, but they're working great - my total data storage is only about 50MB.
