The red circle-slash is one of our most pervasive symbols. It’s everywhere. Yet we struggle to explain it.

(I know, I should just stop there, but I won’t.)

… when the symbol you’re writing about became pervasive in the U.S. The name I remember from the beginning was “international NO symbol,” but I can’t tell you when that was - early 70s-ish? And “international” was definitely a dog whistle for “not invented here.” Anyway, from the beginning that’s what I knew it as.
