❝ It’s not that social media causes mental health problems in that group. Rather, those struggling with mental issues—and who can’t find help elsewhere—often turn to social media to cope. Getting them actual help would be a solution. Cutting off social media, without anything else, could make their situation worse, rather than better. ❞ https://mastodon.social/@dangillmor/112312195615941283
@mapto Why does anyone choose Twitter as a platform? :( But it worked, you saw it.
But yes, that is an interesting response.
Of course both things could be true, and he says that. So many of these “modern society is bad for kids” arguments have been badly formed that the initial reaction is to dismiss them.
I raised my kids at the cusp of the early cell phone introduction and my concern la were more (and this is a very white suburban thing) their complete lack of free time and boredom. There was always something scheduled. But I finally realized it was, in many ways, preparing them for modern life (and that turns out to have been pretty true).
That said, I seriously wonder what the world would look like now without the internet. Bringing everyone together has had huge benefits and horrible results. Would we have had Brexit and Covid conspiracies and the rise of fascism without it? But what about marriage equality, or our ability to respond to Covid so quickly? Would everything just have taken longer and been less transparent?
