@soragnilab @marcoradi @biorxivpreprint lots of discussion about this in relation to articles. the challenge is how to hashtag a DOI/URL since Mastodon doesn't allow search outside hashtags, isn't likely to, and punctuation breaks hashtags. the ideal might be s-thing like #tinyDOIwithnoslashesordots . As for other hashtags, bear in mind this is a bot so it's not like someone can go in and tag concepts. of course what we'll ultimately do is have subject-specific bots like we do in twitter
@richardsever Is it possible for the bot to hashtag 3-5 keywords for each paper? I follow @biorxivpreprint tight but it can be burdensome to go through papers one by one.
@MingqingCai @biorxivpreprint which would it choose and how? I think the key will be subject-specific bots like we have on twitter. but we want to explore best server/instance before rolling these out
@richardsever @MingqingCai @biorxivpreprint I guess a possible scenario would be author selected keywords (2-3?) inputted as part of the preprint submission process - now I am completely aware of the issues here, but I guess fun to this about new possibilities!
@soragnilab @MingqingCai @biorxivpreprint the problem with author-selected keywords is they are not helpful unless selected from a controlled vocabulary (e.g. #integrin will not show up in a search for #celladhesion) and then you have to decide/agree on and maintain the taxonomy (which is a nightmare). it's feasible for things like Human Phenotype Ontology, but that's the exception rather than the rule. search normally solves things but here that just means we're back to the original issue
@soragnilab @MingqingCai @biorxivpreprint so this is a challenge and i agree fun to think about possibilities. one suggestion was that every preprint exists as a mastodon entity/account and serves as a platform for discussion about itself 🤪 - so you can see people are thinking outside the box!
@richardsever @MingqingCai @biorxivpreprint that one I would not have thought about 😂
But as keywords/hashtag goes, I also think it could be ok to leave some of the onus on the authors rather than trying to harmonize (ideal but *super* challenging as you mentioned)
@richardsever @biorxivpreprint opinions vary but in my experience of dealing with tons of references like using Zotero, the most efficient way is Tags, more like hashtags here. Sorting through "subjects" no longer works for me when my work involves multidisciplinary interaction that I find hard to jump around.
I look forward to any improvement soon :)
@marcoradi @biorxivpreprint this is a great point, i have no clue if feasible but ill tag in @richardsever
