@atomicpoet @shelenn Do you have a hypothetical example of how that would work? I ask because I’m not sure I understand. Is it that someone could use CWs to “hide” hurtful content?
@jrm4 @atomicpoet @shelenn Gotcha. Thanks for that explainer.
Imagine these people on an actual battlefield...
"Excuse me!!! Stop shooting at me and my friends already. It is really hurtful to know that anyone might get killed at any moment. I can't take it anymore. Just STOP IT NOW, before I censor you."
@jrm4 @msilpala @atomicpoet @shelenn “in the US”.
As you are on an international platform, it isn't unexpected that some people aren't interested in other country's violence. Especially if there's not one day without some American shitshow going on.
Happy Hitler-Death-Day from Germany! 🥰

Then JUST BLOCK ME. That's fine, no hard feelings.
But what you're NOT going to do is to try to dictate how I say what I say.
I have *no interest and no obligation* to curate MY feed for YOUR interests. In fact, I want the opposite. To the extent that I can, I will not ALLOW you to just "get the fun stuff" without the seriousness.
@Stefan_S_from_H @jrm4 @msilpala @atomicpoet @shelenn Why follow people at all if you're not interested in their content, or if their content makes you feel uncomfortable?
That's your problem not theirs.
@BarrenPlanet @Stefan_S_from_H @jrm4 @msilpala @atomicpoet @shelenn
All social media has this issue (and always has, I think). Imagine finding out that the friend (colleague; account) you followed has more than one interest, not just the one you may have followed them for. They're complex? Who knew?
@harmonygritz @Stefan_S_from_H @jrm4 @msilpala @atomicpoet @shelenn White people need to understand just what huge entitlement and privilege - not to mention fragility - they exhibit when lecturing Black or other non-white people about how they recount their experiences of systemic violence and racism.
Weaponizing CWs to shut down voices we don't want to hear is, in my view, completely unacceptable. Masto provides the tools to screen out content you don't want to see.
@Stefan_S_from_H @jrm4 @msilpala @atomicpoet @shelenn Thanks but I ain't new here, just on a new account.
@Stefan_S_from_H @jrm4 @msilpala @atomicpoet @shelenn that a situation doesn’t directly affect you carries no obligation on anyone’s part to “protect” you from it.
That you view the opression of others as a nuisance that you’d rather not see says something about you as a person & that something is not good.
As a final point: the Germans had nothing to do with Hitler death day. That was other countries cleaning up because y’all voted him into power even after he told you who he was.
Enjoy!
@jrm4 @msilpala @atomicpoet @shelenn I disagree due to the fact that I know a lot of folks suffering from PTSD.
Which means that I may look at posts that don't use any CWs but won't boost them - unlike posts that do.
Just like using #ImageDescriptions using #CW|s is a basic #accessibility feature...
Importance of an issue doesn't justify said basics. Even when live reporting: CWs stay persistent in a thread...
@msilpala@qoto.org
A big one was screaming at black folks and other people of colour to hide their lived experiences behind CWs because thise lived experiences involved experiencing racism.

@msilpala @atomicpoet @shelenn
It's that (usually white) people here often advocate for the use of CW's to prevent them from seeing what they feel is objectionable content.
Problem is, truth hurts. So yes, it's not *fun* seeing e.g. police in the US brutalize black folks, but it should be clear that "please use hashtags to keep this off my timeline" is emphatically the wrong move.
