IT-management and usernames... a weird mix. The usernames of those kids are completely haphazardly decided upon. Some have their last names as usernames, others got first names, and others part of first names because they're foreign in origin like Arabic. Oh and one had first name and last name, but missing the inbetween words like 'van der'. 🙄

@trinsec
my institute follow the [first name].[id number].[department code]@[institute email] format

@mur2501@qoto.org That's a bit overkill for special needs elementary school kids.

@trinsec
that's true too, what is your proposed format?

@mur2501@qoto.org Email is usually first initial.lastname@institution, no problem.

But this is about usernames for iPad logins, seperate from email. And there it's wildly inconsistent like I've mentioned before: Some have first name, some have last name, some have first and last name (but missing all the little words inbetween). It's confusing and makes no sense.

@trinsec
if they have something like an id number or roll number that could be used as an username

@mur2501@qoto.org Numbers? They already can't recall their pin codes to log in with, we're not going to give them numbers lol.

@trinsec
id's don't really need to be numbers, they could well be common words, the only requirements is that they should not be repeated

@mur2501@qoto.org Having their first names is the easiest for those kids, they can read their names. It's just that the IT needs to be consistent about it and not alternate between first, last, first+last, etc, for everybody.

@trinsec
the problem is right there, the first and last name thingy is not consistent itself. some cultures don't even have that concept. also it's very common that their official document name is bigger or different than the name they are generally called by.
So here you will also have to decide what exactly is a first name, what is a last name, etc.

my friend you have just dropped in to the name standardization mud :blobfoxterrified:

@mur2501@qoto.org I live in a country where this shit is already standardized. It's just the IT not adhering to standards! 😭

@trinsec
netherland has a fucking naming standard for babies?? :blobcatgoogly:

@mur2501@qoto.org Fairly. First name and Last name are the minimum requirements. You can have middle names, but they generally don't need to be incorporated in usernames. Last name can come from mother or from father. I'm sure there's a list somewhere where they can say when a name is inappropriate for a baby.

@trinsec
Ahh Dutch seem to be too stringent on naming I wonder how people from outside netherlands handle naming there.

Here it's just a box with the label full name.
no first name, last name shittery (though ofcourse other government docs do require first, middle and last names). You can put whatever you want in there.
Trinsec?
Trrrrrinsec?
Thinsec?
Al muhammad bin Trin Shaikh?

@mur2501@qoto.org I think most of Europe have similar rules as us, with their slight country/cultural variations of course.

@trinsec
Atleast I don't think UK has, we at the end got the law from them
