For Zhuangzi, the question is if I'm a butterfly dreaming its a man and NOT a man dreaming he's a butterfly, what would I do differently with my hands? (or wings). If there is a difference, this it's relevant, if not, then not.
Your last question, "more utility in changing the way we view the situation or leaving the two things as indistinguishable?" Presupposes a difference which we choose to ignore. It is distinguishable, just we are not doing it. Which means it may be relevant
