FYI: I'm now using @jdp23@blahaj.zone more than this account. So you're better off following me there if you're interested in what I have to say in general, or at @thenexusofprivacy if you're primarily interested in the privacy and fediverse-related stuff I often discuss.

The main reason I'm moving is that indieweb.social's admin supports federating with Threads. The great thing about the fediverse is that people can find instances that align with what they want ... so I'm going to do that!

@jdp23@indieweb.social @jdp23@blahaj.zone @thenexusofprivacy It's unfortunate that Threads isn't here yet, and we don't know if it will be, and it's already dividing people.

I can see the argument either way (and yes, that unpleasant conversation has been brought up here before, because we all know Facebook is kinda on the evil side).

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embrace,
One concern I have with them is Embrace Extend Extinguish. Microsoft's old tactic (and perhaps, the privacy angle).

Also, I'm not fond of giving *yet another one of these companies* more power.

@olives@qoto.org I don't think Threads is dividing people, to me it's more that it's highlighting existing tensions. I talked about this some in the "Two views of the fediverse" section of https://privacy.thenexus.today/should-the-fediverse-welcome-surveillance-capitalism/#two-views

And in terms of indieweb, it was a good match for what I was looking for here last fall, but even putting Meta aside I had talked with the admin for a while about some of the directions I hoped things would move and they haven't happened. Which is okay -- it's quite possible that other members don't care about those things, and there's no way he or any other admin can prioritize everybody's requests -- but still, I'm better off somewhere else.
