What's the main difference between the main instance of Mastodon and others? I'm checking a list of other instances, but I don't know if should move to another

@Kyuuk Other instances have more of a HOA vibe where they squabble over petty things and block each other because of a personal beef between admins.

I've noticed that Sakurajima and it's counterpart are run by... Bigots...? Picky bigots. That is, they're mean.

There are also the really free speech instances, but then, you have to deal with chan culture and shitposteurs.

It would be nice to have something more in the middle, free expression but, uh, leave the outright hate at the door.

Qoto is an instance for STEM (Science Technology and so on) individuals, although it's not really an anime instance per se. It does have a long character limit (65k) and quote toots.

@Kyuuk Of course, on the fediverse, it's not unusual for someone to have something like three accounts, lol.

@olives I thought about that a couple hours ago, but I like having a single account for everything (might change this in the future).

@olives It seems like choosing an instance is a "hard" task. You need to be really careful or your instance might not be what you were looking for.

Thanks for the advice, it's good to know the truth about the Sakurajima.

Do you enjoy your instance?

@Kyuuk It's a fairly decent instance, although it's mainly academics and techies, a few of whom seem to like anime.

The admin doesn't allow it to turn into a chan, and I'm not really seeing sexphobia, which is a plus.

The admin is okay, laidback, maybe a bit impulsive in his takes? Then again, he gets the job done. It's not an easy one.

@olives Good to know that you're liking your instance.

Yeah, being a admin seems to be a complicated task.

@olives @Kyuuk I kinda noticed this myself, feels like it's either one extreme or the other, not much in the middle.

@wststreet @Kyuuk I know of a few complaining about that before.

It kind of makes sense, someone might not want to pick between a site where plenty think that hateful rhetoric is funny and a place without proper sexual / free expression.

And if you think of plenty of conventional communities, it's not as if they let themselves turn into a chan.

@wststreet @olives So... I think that should just stick with mastodon.social, idk.

@olives@qoto.org @Kyuuk@mastodon.social Weird take. The admin of Sakurajima has been nothing but polite and helpful to me. I've only been around a few months but I haven't witnessed anything I'd call bigoted.

@NullNowhere @Kyuuk That is good for you. I've seen enough of them and their sister site.

Anyhow, please leave us alone.

@Kyuuk Yeah, no, I'm not going to debate what counts as "real bigotry" or what out-group is okay to shame.

Not going there.

This is a strange thread because they're usually not this responsive, lol, usually very quiet.

@olives Yes, I'm even impressed with so many replies in my question hehe

@olives @NullNowhere Well, the important thing is that you feel better on Qoto than Sakurajima, so you did the best decision!
