I thought I was stomping everyone in today's game of Eclipse (first edition), but I merely beat them. Perhaps surprisingly, in a four-player game, the only PvP combat was when another player threw a single interceptor at my powerful fleet in the center on the last action of the game (for the reputation draw).
I prefer Eclipse to Twilight Imperium. What I'd really love to see is a game that's just about maneuvering the fleets -- no tech tree, no artificial politics, no managing the civilian infrastructure. A 1X game, if you will.
@iain I'd be interested in that, as well as something more strategic (as opposed to tactical).
