We have a computer lab manager whose office is in the bowels of a building where he gets no cell reception. We'd like a way to send him messages when something needs to be fixed in the lab.
What's a simple, free, platform-independent, non-corporate, internet-based messaging application?

One of the faculty in that building has pet rats. I'm sure we could attach tiny strips of paper to them and train them to scurry through ducts...

I like the rats idea though, could convey a lot more info that way. Maybe train then to take micro SD cards
