Does the film you peel back and replace on a microwave meal affect the cooking process, or is it just a splatter guard?

@peterdrake I'm guessing it's effective since microwaves work mainly by heating water molecules in food directly, and any that change phase would escape without the film. Might dry the food out as well

@mrcompletely ... but they almost always have you slash or peel back the film so steam can escape.

@peterdrake Both a splatter guard and moisture retainer. You could replace it with a covering of your choice, I would imagine.
