After getting a phone for our 5-year-old, I received predictable opprobrium and skepticism from other parents, and honestly thought they might be right. But after a while, I think it’s actually a great idea to get one this young, for three reasons: 🧵

@glyph Did you really receive opprobrium from like... people in person? Or is that exaggeration? Who was this from?

I can't imagine anyone that I would voluntarily spend time with providing anything I would describe as "opprobrium" over a parenting decision like this, but maybe I'm a bit naïve, or imagining a different kind of interaction.

@pganssle definitely exaggerating a little bit here, and the context of anything approaching “opprobrium” is parenting discussion groups where there’s like… an explicit invitation to critique. But also a certain kind of involuntary side-eye can come across as opprobrium when you’re in a mandatory-socializing context such as school :-)

@hynek @pganssle I am struggling to imagine what possible word I would have had to fall flat on my face while typing in this context to get “opprobrium”. I’m not exchanging marsupials with other parents

@glyph @pganssle "parenting discussion groups where there’s like… an explicit invitation to critique" my personal definition of hell 😂

@cfbolz @pganssle let me just say "I don't spend a lot of time there" and leave it at that
