Makes more sense when you realize Shuttle program planning began circa 1968 and the first orbital flight took place in 1981. This is early 70s technology, and it shows.

@cstross @kenshirriff the thing where they thought it would be temporary but it went on 50 flights is the most engineering thing I ever heard. There is nothing more permanent than a temporary solution.
