More of my grant proposals to work on mitigating a second Carrington event were rejected this week. Man are we fucked if no one creates a sweeping program to work on this. At what point do I declare all grant-reviewers braindead? Please, please at least have a pantry of supplies in case we have an extended power outage this solar max: ready.gov/kit

@carlysagan The bit that scares me if we have a second Carrington event is what will happen with all the nuclear plants?! That thought keeps me awake at night -- especially during times of heightened solar activity.

@DoomsdaysCW nuclear power plants can’t work without continuous power. So all have generators/backup power. If for some reason (Carrington/Miyake) they use all the backup power… global nuclear meltdown. All who can’t go underground or in a bunker likely die(?).

@carlysagan Exactly. I came up with a short story idea based on folks having to do that after a Carrington event -- "Feeding the Dragons." Gotta keep those fuel rods cool so they don't melt down.

@DoomsdaysCW cool! Write it! I want to read it:) it’s going to happen. We’re insanely stupid to not be planning for this. We can’t continue nuclear power.

@carlysagan I'm hesitant because other my first unfinished sci-fi novel started coming true -- but in the wrong order. I foresaw the rise of the RW in the USA and other events which freaked me out. It's not fun to know the future, try and warn folks, and still have things come true... This is one of my personal theme songs -- "All Come True" by #WorldParty.

@DoomsdaysCW lol good scifi predicts the future. The more spot-on the better the scifi. RW? Right Wing? GOP has been trying to take over for awhile, so we knew it was a possibility, just no one took it srsly. Same with space weather. A modern Carrington event is coming no matter what - the more ppl who point it out, the better.

@carlysagan @DoomsdaysCW

If predictions are "only" in the quality that someone could make a movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger of it, it's not really helping but rather normalizing the dystopian character of the things which are coming up.

@DavidBruchmann @DoomsdaysCW wow this was awhile ago! “Trumps of Doom” was too prophetic. But I disagree, if a dystopian sci-fi makes someone think more about solving x problem, then it helps prevent the dystopia. There is an actual sci-fi term for this but I forget what it is. If only we listened to Trumps of Doom

IIRC it was a reboot of Zelazny's "Amber" series of fantasy novels starring the original protagonist's son, who was more into sorcery than his pop.
